About Me

My name is Mike and I’ve been exploring the wilderness for over 20 years. I started Backcountry Mentor in 2016, as a way to share my experiences and knowledge about wild places. My initial plan is to share backpacking and bushcraft knowledge via Youtube videos, and eventually expand into doing in-person guide services for those wanting some hands-on learning.

I live in Akron, OH, just minutes from Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and a few hours from the Appalachian Mountains, where I’ve spent countless nights under the stars in my hammock (yeah, I’m one of those weird hammock guys).  My Daughter, Shelby, is 11 years old, and I’ve had the fortune to be able to take her into the woods since age 2.

There is a ton more to my story, but that can be saved for another day. Happy hiking!
