Pyro’s Posts: Why I like Backpacking

Shelby in the Great Smokies, enjoying nature!

Every month, my 9-year-old daughter, Shelby (trail name: Pyro) will be writing something for Backcountry Mentor.  This allows her to describe and share about her views on hiking, camping, and backpacking.  I don’t assist her in writing in any way, other than publishing the posts themselves.  I won’t edit the posts, no punctuation checking, no grammar changes, no content editing.  This allows her the freedom to use her own opinions without fear of it feeling like homework  I am simply allowing her to come up with the ideas on her own, and write about whatever she wants to in relation to her own love of nature.  What follows is her first installment.

I like backpacking because it’s challenging but it’s fun to do.  In my opinion nature is beautiful. The first time I went hiking I was only two years old.  I didn’t understand much,so I probably got a little bit confused but I’m sure I still had fun.  Now since I’m nine years old I understand much more than I did six years ago,for example six years ago I wasn’t in school and I wasn’t very smart.  My favorite place that I have been hiking was West Virginia.  I think that is because we had to climb in a really tight space because we were next to a river and there were trees on our other side and because we had lots of fun afterwards.

Half Dome

I would like to go to the grand canyon because I think it would be fun because I would get to rock climb at least a little bit.  I would also like to go to Yosemite, and yellowstone.  I would also like to go to hawaii.  I think that yosemite’s half dome is very unique because nature carved the half of a dome and that is why half dome is my favorite mountain.  I also like el capitan it’s so big and tall.

I live in Akron, ohio.  Near my house there are many locks from an old canal.  All of the wood from the locks rotted away over time so now its only stone that’s left.there are still drains from the old locks.  And there are also the walls of stone from the locks so its very interesting.  One of my favorite locks is lock 15 because, the mustil store is there.  The mustil store is an old store that’s been there for such a long time that its been around since the 18 hundreds.  Its amazing.
